January 25th, 2012 | Posted by in GardeningA lot of folks mistakenly believe that apartment dwellers can’t plant and grow their own garden. There is actually no factual basis to support this idea. You may have a very small apartment but, no matter what size it is, there are ways to have and grow a garden for your flowers and plants. A good way to overcome the obstacles you face when you consider apartment gardening is to garden in containers. OK, where do you begin if you want a nice garden and you live in a small apartment? What are some of the first steps you can take to get off to a successful start to implement your apartment garden? We’ll talk about exactly that in this article.
If you’re in the market for a new apartment or condo, narrow your search to those that have either a balcony or a patio. Even more important is to check and make sure the patio or balcony faces the sunlight. Yes there are plants that thrive in shady areas and in cooler temperatures, but you stand to have a much better chance of success if you can give them some direct sunlight every day. If finding a sunny balcony or patio isn’t feasible for you, don’t give up yet. Do some research and you will discover there are many ways to simulate sunlight for your plants. If at all possible though, direct and actual sunlight-even if it is only for a portion of the day-is best. Fortunately, you have a lot of control in setting up your apartment, so that your plants have the maximum chance for success. On the other hand, you only have limited control over the atmosphere in your home. Some plants simply have a harder time thriving in cooler climates with lots of moisture and others find dry and arid climates to be difficult. It’s possible to control your home environment somewhat, but not to extremes. When you buy your plants, keep their requirements as to atmosphere in mind, and make sure they will do OK in your home’s environment. By doing this ahead of time, you won’t risk losing plants that you had hoped would do well.
Don’t be shy about asking the experienced people who work at your neighborhood garden center or nursery. The employees of most garden center know a lot about many different garden processes and plants. Once you tell them that you desire to start an indoor garden – in containers – because you live in an apartment, they will be able to help you. They’ll tell you which plants you can grow indoors and which plants are okay to grow on a balcony These experts know which plants adapt best to restricted space and an indoors environment, thereby ensuring that your choices are plants that will flourish and give you a lot of enjoyment.
You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to having an apartment garden, no matter how limited your space is.
Think outside the box – don’t be afraid to try something new – and when you get stumped, ask for help from someone who has experience. These are the keys to success. Find sources online, or books at your bookstore, and learn what you can about container garden in a small space. And don’t forget those knowledgeable folks down at your local nursery. They love to help people. Everyone will be eager to share their knowledge with you and, in just a matter of weeks, your apartment will be the home of a beautiful indoors garden.
